Unpacking the 2010 Census:

The New Realities of Race, Class and Jurisdiction in the Metro Richmond Area

Dr. John Moeser, Senior Fellow at the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement at the University of Richmond and Professor Emeritus, Urban Studies and Planning, at Virginia Commonwealth University, will present an overview of the 2010 census as it relates to race and economics in our region.

New census figures about poverty in metropolitan Richmond are startling. Neighborhoods that ten years ago were areas of high-density poverty no longer fit this profile. Meanwhile, areas in 2000 that didn’t fit the profile now do. Are there differences in poverty between city and suburb, between White and Black, between Asian and Latino?

In addition to hearing the data, presented by Dr. Moeser, we will take time to dialogue about..

What does this mean to us as individual Jesus Followers, corporately as the church, and as non-profits and ministries?
What does Jesus have to say on the topic?
What are we called to do – individually and together?
How should we pray?

Several weeks ago, I, along with about 40 others, were taught to facilitate a new presentation called Unpacking the 2010 Census: The New Realities of Race, Class and Jurisdiction. It is a multi-media DVD presentation narrated by Dr. John Moeser, followed by a facilitated dialogue by 2 trained facilitators.

There are 2 options for the Unpacking the 2011 Census presentation:

A one-hour presentation with a focus on current data, comparing and contrasting poverty statistics in our region, and including a facilitated dialogue to follow.
A two-hour presentation includes the same data presentation plus a presentation of the historical context for the region. This is also followed by facilitated dialogue.

Although we will be facilitating this presentation all over the Metro Richmond area, I am most excited about having the opportunity to facilitate in Christian contexts including: churches, community/life/small groups, non-profit ministries, etc. Not only can we take an opportunity to learn about these statistics and the historical context, but the group can also take time to explore why this is important from a biblical point of view….why it is important to God. We will know how to pray. And we can explore how we can then take action…as the church.
